Handcraft meets Technology
This started with a picture of sumac stem & leaves, then the image was
traced on the computer, and the tracing was then cut with the laser.
Finally, a high speed carver was used to give shape to the leaves.
The introduction of a laser cutting system has added a new dimension to the work being offered by Tom Duffy. Fireplace Surround
The columns are made of re-sawn cherry to ensure an exact match. In each column a different fern is laser cut; from root ball to leaf. The lowest features in each panel are left flush with the surface of the column.
As the eye moves up the columns the fern is raised further from background area. The ferns were then carved for shape and detail and glued in place. Final trimming and finishing yields the beautiful fireplace surround you see pictured here.
